The Thunderbolt name was the result of a contest with a $50.00 prize. The Thunderbolt name was bestowed on July 4th, 1928 -- for the prior two weeks it was referred to as the Giant Roller Coaster.

The Thunderbolt was owned by Walter S. Delscamp of Dayton, Ohio and was built by the Bennett & Salisbury Company of Detroit, Michigan.
