Location

Big Thunder Mountain in Disneyland Paris differs from the three other installations (Anaheim, Orlando and Tokyo) by being located on an articifial island. The three oldest installations have the coaster's station and full layout attached as one entity, alongside the Rivers of America. The Parisian version however has the coaster start out alongside the Rivers of the Far West and takes the train and its riders through a tunnel underneath the water onto the island. The ride runs its course on the island with a high speed finale on the return leg of the trip back underneath the river.

Notes

Big Thunder Mountain closed for a lengthy and extensive refurbishment from November 2nd 2015 until December 16th 2016. The ride reopened on December 17th 2016 with the whole ride and surroundings being refurbished and new effects being added on the final lift.
In 2021 the trains were adapted so that one car on every train now has an easy to remove side panel to make for easier disabled access. These modifications were done by Reverchon.

Theme

The rockwork of Big Thunder Mountain is inspired by Monument Valley in Arizona as is the case with the installations of Big Thunder Mountain (Railroad) in Orlando and Tokyo. The installation of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Anaheim, California however is inspired by Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah.
