01 Oct 2008 -- LOOKING FOR SOME SPOOK-TACULAR FUN?
LOOKING FOR SOME SPOOK-TACULAR FUN?

Annual Fright Fest Presented by SNICKERS® Provides Thrills by Day, Chills by Night This October

AUSTELL, Ga. – (Sept. 23, 2008) – The most ghoulishly fun Halloween celebration is back at Six Flags Over Georgia, and this year’s Fright Fest presented by SNICKERS® will be even more spook-tacular than ever with new elements to both the “thrills by day” and the “chills by night.” The highlight of this year’s Fright Fest is the Wheel of Fright, where those who can stomach it will feast on live crickets, night crawlers, fruit flies and wax worms for the chance to win front-of-line passes, t-shirts and 2009 daily admission tickets.

In addition to the Wheel of Fright, the park will hold special family-friendly activities during the day in Bugs Bunny World including:

  • Mini pumpkin painting – This takes place on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Kids costume contest – Parents can register their children for the ages 6 and under or 7-12 categories at 3:30 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday during Fright Fest at the Bugs Bunny World Theater.
  • Trick or treat trail – Fright Fest would not be complete without treats for our littlest visitors.
  • Children’s corn maze – Stop by the Carrot Patch to travel through the corn maze.
  • More – Scary storytime, arts and craft stations and more are available at no additional cost.

Finally, the park offers many additional new entertainment options for the season including:

  • Wheel of Fright – The theme of this year’s Wheel of Fright is to “save a cockroach…eat another creepy crawler!” Hosted by “Cockroach Pete,” guests are summoned to spin the Wheel of Fright for the chance to win great prizes or eat a live insect each night at the Mariner’s Cove stage.

  • Dr. Fright’s Dead Man’s Party – This annual favorite is coming back to Six Flags Over Georgia. Now running for more than 10 years, guests won’t want to miss this high-energy party of the dead in the Drive-In Theater.

  • Love at First Fright (NEW) – New for 2008, this family musical invites guests to join Jack and Katie on their dare…to spend a night in the cemetery.

  • Bad Bob the Bone Butcher – Another returning show that's more about humor than horror. Bad Bob returns from the grave to "get" the sheriff and his sidekick, but what you get are a lot of laughs at the Lickskillet stage.

  • Mort’s Caskets Sales – Riga Mortus, nicknamed Mort, is a little strange, but an enthusiastic entrepreneur nonetheless. Stop by the park’s French section to see Mort try and sell guests the perfect caskets. They may have been used before, but hey, can’t knock a guy for recycling, right?

  • Dr. Fright’s Frightorium Haunted House – ($10 admission fee) – A once esteemed doctor of medicine, Dr. Fright went mad when his wife and daughter died of the plague. Always a firm believer of science, Dr. Fright attempted to bring his daughter back to life, and it was successful…sort of. Before attempting to bring his wife back to life, the doctor decided to practice on other patients to perfect the process. Unfortunately, he still hasn’t gotten it right, and he gets more and more mad with each unsuccessful try that produces crazy zombies. Watch out for Dr. Fright and the zombies in the Frightorium and don’t let him try to practice on you!

Guests are also encouraged to take a ride on Monster Plantation one last time in 2008, as the ride will officially close down at season’s end, and the all-new Monster Mansion will open in 2009. Monster Mansion will feature some new characters and interactive elements.

To kick off Fright Fest, the park is partnering with the American Red Cross to hold a blood drive from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3. Those who donate blood will receive a free admission ticket valid during select Fright Fest dates.

Six Flags Over Georgia is now selling 2009 season passes for the limited-time only price of $49.99 – the lowest price in four years. Guests who purchase a 2009 season pass will receive unlimited park admission not only in 2009, but also for the remainder of the 2008 season with special front-of-line entrance on Monster Plantation and free admission to see Dr. Fright's Frightorium Haunted House during this year's Fright Fest. Season pass holders will also be given special exclusive ride time next spring on the all-new Monster Mansion along with the value-packed 2009 coupon book with more than $300 worth of offers including five Bring-A-Friend-Free tickets.

Fright Fest at Six Flags Over Georgia takes place on Friday nights from 6 p.m. – 11 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. starting Oct. 3. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.sixflags.com/overgeorgia.

15 Sep 2008 -- A MONSTER ANNOUNCEMENT
Press release from the park:

A MONSTER ANNOUNCEMENT:
HISTORIC MONSTER PLANTATION
TAKES GUESTS ON A WHOLE NEW JOURNEY

AUSTELL, GA. – (Sept. 15, 2008) – Six Flags Over Georgia announced today that the historic Monster Plantation adventure will undergo a major renovation to be unveiled as the new Monster Mansion in May 2009.

Since 1981, the Monster Plantation has been a tried and true staple for families visiting Six Flags Over Georgia. The iconic theme music, playful monster animatronics and family-friendly storyline has lured millions of visitors and consistently ranked among the most popular attractions. The new voyage will feature a slate of surprises, including new characters, music, interactive elements and a re-themed storyline. In addition, many of the original monsters will return to the Mansion.

“Monster Plantation has been a guest favorite for almost three decades, and we are thrilled to be able to recreate the experience,” said Melinda Ashcraft, Park President. “There is undoubtedly a lot of nostalgia associated with the ride, and the adults who rode it as children will now get to enjoy special memories with their own kids.”

Gary Goddard, world-renowned design consultant and founder of Gary Goddard Entertainment (GGE), created the original ride and will be responsible for the new production using many of the original designers assigned to the project. Goddard constructed the integral elements of the Georgia Aquarium, including the hub that leads to the aquarium’s five exhibits and Deepo’s Undersea 3D Wondershow. In 2007, GGE developed the Glow in the Park parade which lights up the night with an amazing display of imagery, music and magical performances at several Six Flags parks.

Fright's Frightorium Haunted House during this year's Fright Fest presented by SNICKERS®. Season pass holders will also be given special exclusive ride times next spring on the all-new Monster Mansion along with the value-packed 2009 coupon book with more than $300 worth of offers including five Bring-A-Friend-Free tickets.

The park is currently open weekends and will be open Friday nights and Saturdays and Sundays in October. For more information on Monster Mansion or to purchase a 2009 season pass, please visit www.sixflags.com/overgeorgia.

29 Jun 2008 -- Boy Dies at Six Flags Over Georgia
Yesterday, on Saturday, June 28, 2008, a 17 year old boy climbed over two fences and entered a restricted area containing Batman: the Ride. The boy was hit by the ride and killed instantly.

The following article is from AJC.com:

Boy decapitated by roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia
Victim from Springfield, S.C., identified

By RHONDA COOK, MARCUS GARNER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 06/28/08

The popular "Batman the Ride" rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia remained closed Sunday while authorities continued investigating the death of a teenager who jumped over two fences and was struck by the ride.

The 17-year-old South Carolina teen who died was identified as Asia Leeshawn Ferguson, of Springfield, S.C. He was on a church outing when the incident occurred about 2 p.m. Saturday. It was the second Batman ride-related death at the Cobb County park.

According to police and the amusement park, Ferguson and a friend climbed over two 6-foot fences -- a wrought-iron style park perimeter fence and a second chainlink fence around the Batman ride -- as a shortcut to get back into the park after lunch. Signs about 40 to 50 feet apart on the outer fence warn that it is a "restricted area" for "authorized personnel only."

According to park officials, a sign on a locked gate at the chain link fence also reads "Danger zone" and "Do not enter."

Ferguson was decapitated when the ride struck him, police said.

"It is still unclear why the two men were trying to gain access to this unauthorized area," park spokeswoman Hela Sheth told reporters Saturday, reading from a prepared statement.

She declined to answer questions at a news conference and did not return calls seeking more information.

The teen was with a group from Oakley Spring Baptist Church in Salley, S.C., a small town about 50 miles east of Augusta. He had been in Six Flags earlier in the day, but he and another boy left the park property to get some lunch, according to Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce.

Rather than returning to the park through the regular entrance, the pair took a shortcut, Pierce said.

"The area's clearly defined with signs," Pierce said. "It's very tragic that these individuals would decide to jump over the fence. It would be hard to imagine somebody not seeing the signs and jumping two fences."

No one on the ride was injured, Six Flags said in the statement. Ferguson's family was at the park at the time of the accident, according to the amusement park.

Pierce said there were many witnesses, and the county's 911 center was almost immediately flooded with calls from people reporting what they had seen.

The park's statement said one of the first to call for help was an Marietta police officer who had been in line for the Batman ride.

"Six Flags security and safety personnel responded immediately, and Cobb County Fire [Department] was on site just minutes after the incident occurred," Sheth said. "The medical examiner arrived on scene and confirmed that the 17-year-old male was killed instantaneously."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," she said.

The Batman ride was run briefly after the accident so police investigators could take measurements. It was closed to the public Saturday evening. The rest of Six Flags remained open. The park said the ride likely will resume operating on Monday.

Batman riders dangle beneath a track and travel up to 50 m.p.h., climbing and dropping the distance equal to an 11-story building and going through two vertical loops and two single corkscrews.

The first fatality involving the Batman ride in Georgia occurred six years ago.

A 58-year-old park worker, Samuel Milton Guyton of Atlanta, was killed May 26, 2002. Guyton was in a restricted area on a platform when he was kicked in the head by 14-year-old girl on the front car of the ride. The girl was hospitalized with a leg injury.

Over the years, several ride-related deaths have been reported at Six Flags parks nationwide.

Last March, a worker dismantling a ride at Six Flags Great America near Chicago fell 40-feet to his death. In 2004 at the same park, a maintenance worker was hit by a roller coaster and killed.

A 55-year-old disabled man was killed in May 2004 when he was thrown from a ride at Six Flags New England near Springfield, Mass. Five years ago, a grandmother strapping her 4-year-old grandson into Six Flags New Orleans' Joker's Jukebox ride was hit by a spinning car when the ride began operating before she was out of the way.

-- Staff writer S.A. Reid and news researcher Joni Zeccola contributed to this story.

Please remember that rules and regulations -- as well as fences, barricades, and posted signage -- are in place to protect you, the guest. Please make yourself and your children aware of this, as tragic accidents such as this are so easily avoided.

11 Jun 2008 -- Press Release: Walk In The Park For a Good Cause!
Press release from the park:

Guests Encouraged to
'Walk In The Park' for a Good Cause

Six Flags Friends partners with Cure Kids Cancer
to host 2K walk at Six Flags Over Georgia

AUSTELL, Ga. – (June 5, 2008) – Visitors to Six Flags Over Georgia know that there’s typically a lot of walking involved during a day at the park. Now, guests have the chance to walk toward a good cause as Six Flags Friends, the philanthropic arm of Six Flags, Inc., and Cure Kids Cancer team up for the first time to host “A Walk in the Park.” This 2K walk event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 8:00 a.m. inside the park and all proceeds will benefit Cure Kids Cancer, an organization that raises funds for local pediatric cancer programs including Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

“Cancer affects people from every walk of life and is the leading cause of death from disease in children,” said Melinda Ashcraft, park president. “I encourage everyone to take part in this event to support a great cause as we all walk toward a cure.”

Six Flags Friends is coordinating walks at 12 Six Flags parks across the country Sept. 6-7 with the goal of raising $1 million. Interested walkers may register at www.walkintheparks.org where they can join the Six Flags Over Georgia Team and help support the overall park goal of raising $100,000. All proceeds from the Six Flags Over Georgia “A Walk In The Park” event will go directly to various Atlanta children’s hospitals.

Stephen Hess, age 7, will serve as Six Flags Over Georgia’s walk ambassador. At age 6, Stephen was diagnosed with Burkitt's leukemia, a rare and highly aggressive form of cancer that affects only about 400 children in the United States per year. After undergoing seven months of intense treatment, he is now cancer free, thanks to the care he received at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

"Cure Kids Cancer is honored to be working with Six Flags Friends to generate resources to help hospitals and physicians find better treatments and hopefully someday a cure for pediatric cancers," said Jami Brinton, Director of Cure Kids Cancer. "As a cancer survivor myself, I strongly believe children should be able to experience all the joys of childhood without having to worry that a diagnosis of cancer may dampen their greatest dreams."

For a $25 registration fee, walk participants will receive breakfast the morning of the event, a gift bag, a Cure Kids Cancer souvenir wristband and the ability to purchase discounted admission to enjoy Six Flags rides and activities after the walk. For more information and to register, visit www.walkintheparks.org.
