Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags over Georgia
Great American Scream Machine
Six Flags over Georgia
-- by Tim Baldwin

In its first decade, Six Flags Over Georgia was enjoying noticeable growth as a fledgling theme park. In fact, theme parks themselves were still in their infancy in the late 60s/early 70s. During this time period, Six Flags had a wooden coaster in the works, their largest expansion to date at that time.

Opening in April of 1973, Six Flags’ Great American Scream Machine would be the first wooden roller coaster built in the Six Flags chain. Designed by the legendary John Allen of Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the coaster was intended to be his last, until Six Flags would once again nudge him out of retirement three years later in St. Louis. Working with Don Rosser and Bill Cobb, this John Allen project would anchor their work in more wooden coasters in the years to follow.
