Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was initally a project for Walt Disney World - Magic Kingdom but was pushed back in favor of the park's installation of Pirates of the Carribean. The project later was repurposed for Disneyland in Anaheim, California where it had to be mirrored to fit in the foreseen lot. Disney decided at that point to build two Big Thunder Mountain Railroads partly simultaneously: the one at Disneyland and the one at Walt Disney World - Magic Kingdom. The California version opened on September 2nd 1979, whereas the one in Orlando opened November 15th 1980. |
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will close from January 5th 2025 until an un unknown date in 2026. The area behind the roller coaster is being redeveloped by Walt Disney World - Magic Kingdom needing the ride's area to be closed for an extended period of time. |
The rockwork of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is inspired by Monument Valley in Arizona as is the case with the installations of Big Thunder Mountain in Tokyo and Paris. The installation of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Anaheim, California however is inspired by Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. |
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a near mirror image of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. |
