Etymology

'Jardin d'Acclimatation' is French for 'Garden of Acclimatisation'.

History

Jardin d'Acclimatation was founded by French president Napoleon III in 1860. The 19th century was they heyday of modern colonialism and imperialism. European Countries brought animals and plants from far-off places to Europe to the surprise and bewilderment of the public. Jardin d'Acclimatation was built to have a place where all these plants and animals could acclimatise to the European climate.
From 1931 on, it became more of a traditional zoo and later on an attraction/theme park.
