Etymology

'Sybrandy' Speelpark' is Dutch for 'Sybrandy's Play Park', named after the owner Simon Sybrandy.

History

'Sybrandy's Speelpark' was a small family owned recreational park. When the owner Simon Sybrandy retired he couldn't find anyone who wanted to continue his business together with his son Rienk Sybrandy. Initally the park was set to close permanently.
A rescue operation led by Sjerp Jaarsma, the owner of nearby (about 4 km) recreational Park 'De Hege Gerzen' succeedded and the city agreed on granting a loan to help out.
Sjerp Jaarsma will be moving all of the rides from Sybrandy's Speelpark to De Hege Gerzen for the 2020 season. He plans on eventually renaming his own park to 'Sybrandy’s Speel- en Natuurpark' (Dutch for 'Sybrandy's Play and Nature Park').
